Milestone, Record, Seven to Podium for Men's Wrestling
The Muhlenberg men's wrestling team produced seven placewinners on the first day of the NCAA Region 3 Championships, hosted by Messiah.
Heading to the second day, and ultimately the podium, are graduate student Joey Lamparelli (125), sophomores CJ Horvath (133), Andrew Loniewski (141), and Trey Miletics (157), senior Anson Dewar (174), junior Ryan Fairchild (184), and senior Andrew Franklin (285). All need three wins on Saturday to finish third in their weight classes and qualify for nationals.
The seven regional placewinners are the most in program history, topping the previous high of six.
Muhlenberg's first two wins came with some history. In his first bout at 125, Lamparelli scored a 5-1 decision for the 100th win of his career. He is the third wrestler in program history to reach the century mark, and win number 101, on a technical fall in his first consolation bout, made Lamparelli an all-region performer for the fourth straight year.
At 133, Horvath recorded a technical fall in his opener, setting a school record with his eighth tech of the season. Horvath secured a spot in the top eight by coming back from an early 7-0 deficit to defeat his Marymount opponent, 9-8, in the consolation bracket. He also nearly pulled off a big comeback in his lone loss, scoring two third-period takedowns against the 18th-ranked wrestler in Division III but coming up short, 12-10.
Loniewski recorded a pin and major decision to advance to the second day and match his total of 27 wins from last year.
Miletics got a tough draw in the third-ranked 157-pounder in Division III for his first bout, but rebounded with two decisions, the second against a Johns Hopkins opponent who teched him at the Centennial Conference Championships just two weeks ago.
Dewar (pictured above) did not allow a point in either of his two wins, a technical fall and a major decision, reaching the podium for the third time in his career.
Fairchild recorded his 30th career pin before losing by decision to the 10th-ranked 184-pounder in Division III. He scored an 8-2 decision in his first consolation bout to earn a place at regionals for the second consecutive year.
Franklin earned his first career trip to the podium with a major decision and a decision against the same Ursinus wrestler he defeated in the CC semifinals. His lone loss was 9-7 to the 10th-ranked 285-pounder in Division III.
