Bergara Tosses No-Hitter
Behind a historic pitching performance from junior Justine Bergara, the Muhlenberg softball team split a doubleheader at King's.
Bergara tossed a no-hitter in the nightcap, a 5-0 Mule win. It was the seventh seven-inning no-hitter in program history, and the first since Kelsey Jones twirled a perfect game against Misericordia in 2013. Muhlenberg's last no-no, in 2022, was a five-inning combined effort.
Bergara (pictured above) was brilliant throughout, striking out a career-high 9 batters. She struck out the side in the third and also fanned three batters in the sixth, when the Monarchs (9-7) had their only baserunner on a hit batter. Of the other 12 outs, eight came on ground balls, and only one batter, the last one of the game, hit the ball out of the infield.
It was the third career shutout for Bergara, who pitched six hitless innings in her start last week against Delaware Valley before getting relieved. She has allowed more than one earned run in only one of her 10 starts and is 8-1 with a 0.63 ERA.
Bergara got all the support she needed when the Mules (13-6) plated four runs in the top of the third. With the bases loaded and one out, freshman Lillie Teague delivered a two-run single. A bunt by freshman Skyla Campisi and sacrifice fly by junior Kaya Mahy brought in two more runs.
Freshman Peri Kahn drove in the final run with her third hit of the game, a double, in the top of the seventh.
King's scored runs in only one of its 13 turns at bat in the twinbill, but plated five runs in the bottom of the fourth inning of the opener and went on to a 5-3 win.
Kahn drove in the Mules' first run of the game with a squeeze bunt and scored the second on a steal of home.
Senior Sophia Cicchetti, who entered the game tied for fifth in Division III with 23 stolen bases, swiped three more bags and scored three runs in the two games.
