Upperweights Lift Men's Wrestling in Home Opener
The Muhlenberg men's wrestling team picked up wins in the final six bouts to come from behind and defeat New Jersey City, 33-11, in its first dual match of the season.
Trailing 11-3 after four bouts, the Mules recorded a major decision, a technical fall and two pins in the last four contested weight classes.
The winning streak started with a closer bout, however, as freshman Charles Levine posted a gritty 7-6 decision at 157. Levine scored a reversal in the second period to take a 6-5 lead into the final period. He was called for a penalty early in the period but rode his opponent for the entire two minutes, picking up the point for riding time that gave him the win.
Senior Chris Sockler followed with a 19-7 major decision at 165 to bring Muhlenberg to within a point at 11-10. Sockler (pictured above) recorded two takedowns and a three-point near-fall in the first period, reversed his opponent after getting taken down in the second and finished with two more takedowns in the third.
Senior Aidan Weingrad gave the Mules the lead for good with a technical fall at 174, racking up four takedowns and two near-falls in less than two periods.
Seniors Fletcher Goodman (184) and Paul Parise (285) put the stamp on the win with first-period pins.
In the first bout of the match, senior Brian McCaw fought off an injury to record an 8-6 decision at 125.
