One Gold, Numerous PRs for Track & Field

The Muhlenberg track and field teams opened the Centennial Conference Championships with a big day that included a historic gold medal.

The Muhlenberg track and field teams opened the Centennial Conference Championships with a big day that included a historic gold medal.

The Mule men were in fourth place, just five points out of second, and the women were in seventh after the first day of the meet.

Senior Dylan DeMagistris (pictured above right) became Muhlenberg's first-ever conference champion in the weight throw, winning his second career CC gold medal with a mark of 53-5 on his second attempt. He led a 1-2 Mule finish in the event, with sophomore Mike Powel taking silver in 52-3¼, improving on his personal best by nearly three feet.

The two throwers combined for 18 of Muhlenberg's 31 points, with 11 more coming on relays. The 4x200 team won a bronze medal with the second-best time in program history, and the 4x800 quartet posted the program's eighth-fastest time to place fourth.

Freshman Maxwell Broadbent upped his PR by 7 inches to place seventh in the triple jump.

Junior Joshua Castro (60 meters) and senior Sam McDonough (60-meter hurdles) both qualified for Sunday finals, with Castro matching his personal best and McDonough lowering his school record.

Freshman Jaden Snow led the heptathlon through four events.

The women had two placewinners in each of two field events, with junior Erica Borbi and senior Faith Fezenko placing fifth and eighth, respectively, in the weight throw, and sophomore Shira Gamson and Shanice Williams taking sixth and seventh, respectively, in the triple jump. Borbi, Gamson and Williams all posted personal bests, with Williams quadruple-jumping from eighth to fourth on the all-time performance list.

Freshman Maya Richwine posted the fastest qualifying time in the hurdles, lowering her PR from 9.15 to 9.03.

The 4x200-meter relay team ran the fourth-fastest time in program history – the best since 2009 – to place eighth. The DMR, including sophomore Lydia Jenkins-Ford and junior Katie Shepard (pictured above left), also came in eighth.

Although she didn't place in the pole vault, freshman Kaitlyn Legaspi moved up a spot to eighth on the performance list, adding more than 4 inches to her best.
