Pitching, Long Balls Lift Baseball to Split

Two home runs and two strong pitching performances led the Muhlenberg baseball team to a 6-3 win against Springfield in the second game of a doubleheader in Florida.

Two home runs and two strong pitching performances led the Muhlenberg baseball team to a 6-3 win against Springfield in the second game of a doubleheader in Florida.

With the Mules (3-5) already ahead 2-0 in the bottom of the third, freshman Marc Quarrie lifted a high fly ball over the fence in left for his second three-run home of the season.

Springfield (5-4) got two runs back in the top of the fifth, but junior Brendan Hughes belted his fourth career home run in the bottom of the inning.

Sophomore Daniel Beagle, making his first career start, earned the win. Beagle (pictured above) allowed only three baserunners in the first four innings before allowing a pair of runs in the fifth. Sophomore Evan Virno relieved with one out in the fifth and pitched 2.2 innings without allowing an earned run to pick up the save.

Virno was aided by two double plays, starting a 1-4-3 twin killing himself to end the sixth. Both double plays were turned in the middle by junior second baseman Aidan Legner.

The defensive star of the game, however, was junior catcher Dylan O'Donnell, who threw out three runners attempting to steal, one to end the fifth with the tying run at bat.

O'Donnell also singled in the first run of the game. Quarrie went 3-for-3.

In the opening game, senior Ryan Friesen allowed only three hits and one earned run in five innings, but the Pride scored three unearned runs in the third en route to a 4-3 win.

Senior Ryan Riccio hit a double and a triple, scoring on a two-out single by Nick Stannard to bring the Mules to within a run at 4-3 in the sixth. Muhlenberg went down 1-2-3 in the seventh, however.

Freshman Charlie Siper was impressive in his collegiate debut in the sixth, striking out two of the three batters he faced.
