Men's Wrestling Splits Four at Scotty Wood
The Muhlenberg men's wrestling team faced some tough competition and split four matches at the Scotty Wood Duals.
The Mules (3-4) won their matches against Shenandoah, 46-6, and Keystone, 47-3. Their two losses came to Washington and Lee (34-10), a team with eight regionally ranked wrestlers, and Messiah (32-13), a team with six.
Senior Paul Parise had the most impressive showing against a regionally ranked opponent, building an 11-1 lead before pinning his Messiah opponent - ranked fourth at 197 in Region 3 - with about a minute left in the third. Parise also recorded pins against Shenandoah and Keystone.
In addition to Parise, sophomore CJ Horvath and seniors Fletcher Goodman and Joey Lamparelli all went 3-1 on the day. Horvath (pictured above) was pinned in his first bout but rebounded with a decision, a major decision and a technical fall.
Goodman recorded a major decision against Washington and Lee and needed less than a minute to notch a technical fall against Shenandoah. He also wrestled a solid match against the fourth-ranked 184-pounder in the region, falling 3-1 on an early takedown.
Lamparelli's three wins included a 5-0 decision against the sixth-ranked 125-pounder in Region 4.
In a matchup of two regionally ranked wrestlers, senior Brandon Bowles (third in Region 3) overcame an early takedown to pin his Washington and Lee opponent (sixth in Region 4) in 1:43.
Senior Chris Sockler competed in one of the Mules' most entertaining matches against Shenandoah. Each wrestler recorded two takedowns in the first two periods, resulting in an 8-8 tie entering the final period. Sockler escaped at the start of the period to take a 9-8 lead, then took his opponent down and pinned him with 1:07 left.
