Big Late Inning Sinks Baseball Team
A six-run seventh inning broke open a close game as the Muhlenberg baseball team fell at home to Albright, 12-5.
The score was tied, 4-4, with two outs and one on in the top of the seventh, but the Mules (6-11) just could not get the last out. Seven straight batters reached base for the Lions (4-12), putting Muhlenberg in a 10-4 hole that was too big to overcome.
The Mules had already come from behind twice in the game. After falling behind 1-0 in the top of the second, Muhlenberg answered with three runs in the bottom of the frame on consecutive run-scoring doubles by seniors Jonathan Toth and Ryan Riccio.
Albright tied the score in the fourth and went ahead 4-3 in the top of the sixth. In the bottom of the sixth, sophomore Thomas Pranzo led off with a double and came around with the tying run on a two-out single by sophomore Evan Virno, who fouled off four two-strike pitches before delivering the big hit on the 10th pitch of the at-bat.
Riccio (pictured above) went 3-for-4 with 3 RBI for the Mules, who were playing their final game before beginning Centennial Conference play.
