Baseball Wins Behind Kent Triple-Double
The Muhlenberg baseball team scored runs in all but two innings and went on to win at Gwynedd Mercy, 9-6.
Graduate student Jack Kent went 5-for-5 and tied a school record by hitting three doubles. The second Mule to record a five-hit game already this season, Kent is the eighth different player in program history with three two-baggers in a game. He was due to lead off the ninth inning with a chance to tie the school record of six hits in a game, but the game was stopped due to darkness.
Kent narrowly missed leading off a game with a home run for the second straight contest, blasting one off the fence in left for his first double. He scored on a ground ball two batters later to give the Mules (4-2) a 1-0 lead.
Muhlenberg added two runs on a throwing error in the second and plated three more in the third to extend the lead to 6-0. Kent drove in a run in the third with his second double.
Run-scoring extra-base hits by senior Brendan Bussiere (double in the sixth, triple in the eighth) and sophomore Marc Quarrie (double in the seventh) gave the Mules single tallies in each of the final three frames.
Senior Brendan Hughes went 4-for-5, while Bussiere finished 3-for-5 with a pair of stolen bases.
Senior James Hopke (pictured above) needed only seven pitches to toss a 1-2-3 fifth and earn his first career win. He came on in relief of freshman Kieran Mulholland, who tossed four strong innings in his first career start.
Senior Ethan Brochin struck out two of the three batters he faced in the eighth for his sixth career save.
