Four Win Bouts at State Championships
Four members of the Muhlenberg women's wrestling team won at least one bout at the Pennsylvania State Championships, hosted by East Stroudsburg.
Freshman Karla Lazaro led the Mules with a pair of pins at 160. She trailed 8-0 less than two minutes into her opening bout and was down 10-2 at the end of the first period before taking down her York opponent and pinning her 27 seconds into the second period. Lazaro (pictured above) didn't need to come from behind in her other win, building a 7-0 lead en route to another pin against a wrestler from Alvernia.
Lazaro's only two losses were to the second and third seeds.
Freshman Alessandra Rodriguez (124), senior Penelope Schneider (138) and freshman Kelsey Gelb (160) also recorded pins. Rodriguez pinned a Delaware Valley opponent for the second time this season to place fifth. Schnieder pinned an East StroudsburgĀ opponent with seconds to go in the first period, and Gelb needed only 62 seconds to notch her 11th fall of the season.
The one Muhlenberg wrestler who didn't record a win came close. At 145, freshman Ella Pomeranz came back from an 8-2 first-period deficit to close to within two, but could not get a takedown in the final minute and lost, 10-8.
