Men's Basketball Captures CC Road Win
The Muhlenberg men's basketball team picked up its first Centennial Conference win of the season, taking command late for a 69-65 win at Haverford.
Sophomore Elias Sherman-Murphy scored 13 of his career-high 19 points in the second half as the Mules (8-10, 1-5) snapped a six-game losing streak and avenged a home loss to the Fords (5-13, 2-4) less than three weeks ago.
Haverford wrapped a 16-0 run around halftime, turning a 14-point deficit into a two-point lead less than two minutes into the second half. The next 16 minutes featured five lead changes and four ties, with neither team leading by more than four points.
Muhlenberg took the lead for good with 7:25 remaining at 55-53 when sophomore Peter Stanton-Shepherd converted a nice pass from senior Luke Gordos for a layup after Sherman-Murphy beat two Fords to a missed shot, deflecting it out for an offensive rebound. Sherman-Murphy then stole the ensuing inbounds pass and made a layup to extend the lead to four.
The margin seesawed between two and four until Sherman-Murphy drove in for a layup to make it 65-59 with two minutes remaining. Sherman-Murphy added another layup and a pair of free throws to enable the Mules to hold on.
Gordos (pictured above) finished with 15 points on 7-of-10 shooting, while senior Giovanni Rubino added 12 points, 8 rebounds and 4 assists.
