Men's Wrestlers Defeat Ranked Opponents
Three wins against regionally ranked opponents highlighted a day of tough competition for the Muhlenberg men's wrestling team at Wilkes' John Reese Duals.
The Mules fell to Oneonta, 33-17, and 16th-ranked Ithaca, 39-15, before wrapping up a stretch of four matches in less than 24 hours with a 51-4 win against Keystone.
Graduate student Joey Lamparelli was responsible for two of the wins against ranked foes. He faced the eight-ranked 125-pounder in Region 2 in the opening match and recorded a 13-4 major decision. Lamparelli (pictured above) led only 6-4 in the second period after getting taken down, but he reversed his opponent and then outscored him 5-0 in the third period.
Lamparelli's Ithaca opponent is ranked third in Region 2 but was held without a point. An escape by Lamparelli accounted for the only scoring in the first two periods, and the Ithaca wrestler chose down for the third period. But Lamparelli kept him down for the entire frame, recording a near-fall along the way for a 5-0 decision.
Lamaprelli picked up a forfeit win against Keystone to complete the 3-0 day and move into a tie for fourth place on the program's all-time list with 94 career wins.
Sophomore CJ Horvath also notched an impressive win against an Oneonta wrestler who is ranked third at 133 in Region 2. He trailed 5-4 heading into the final period before scoring a takedown and winning 8-7 on riding time.
Sophomore Andrew Loniewski went 3-0 with two pins and a major decision to reach the 20-win mark for the second straight season. He was up 7-1 when he pinned his Ithaca opponent with just 10 seconds left in the match and needed only 48 seconds to flatten his Keystone opponent.
Junior Ryan Fairchild won two of his three bouts, suffering his first loss of the season to a ranked Ithaca opponent. Fairchild's two wins - both by fall, the second in just 56 seconds - gave him an even 50 wins for his career.
