Softball Drops Two Despite Records, Comebacks
The Muhlenberg softball team came back twice in the second game of its home doubleheader but lost to Ursinus, 7-3.
The Mules (16-11, 3-5) allowed a run in the first inning and played from behind the whole game into the bottom of the fifth, when senior Sophia Cicchetti singled with one out to extend her hitting streak to 22 games. The next batter, freshman Peri Kahn, faked a bunt and chopped the ball to third. She was retired at first, but Cicchetti wheeled around to third and then stole home on a slow throw back to the pitcher from the catcher with the next batter at the plate.
It was the 32nd stolen base of the season for Cicchetti, tying a school record set 25 years ago.
The Bears (11-15, 3-3) took the lead right back in the top of the sixth, but in the bottom of the inning, Muhlenberg loaded the bases with two outs. Senior Dara DiMaiolo came off the bench to pinch-hit and delivered a two-run single to right-center to give the Mules their first lead of the day, 3-2.
Ursinus spoiled the party, though, by scoring five runs in the top of the seventh.
In the opening game, the Bears scored four in the fourth and one in the fifth en route to a 5-1 win. Cicchetti scored Muhlenberg's lone run on Kahn's sacrifice fly in the sixth.
Freshman Gabby Colder pitched three stellar innings in relief, retiring nine of the 10 batters she faced.
Stolen bases in the doubleheader by junior Kaya Mahy (pictured above), Cicchetti, Colder and freshman Lillie Teague gave the Mules 74 swipes on the season, breaking the school record of 72 set in 2010.
