Four Wrestlers Place at Regionals

Four members of the Muhlenberg men's wrestling team earned places by advancing to the second day of the NCAA Mideast Regional.

Four members of the Muhlenberg men's wrestling team earned places by advancing to the second day of the NCAA Mideast Regional.

Senior Joey Lamparelli (125) won both of his bouts on the first day to reach the championship semifinals. Junior Frank DiEsso (133), freshman Andrew Loniewski (141) and sophomore Ryan Fairchild (184) were all alive in the consolation semis.

The top three finishers in each weight class earn bids to the NCAA Championships.

Lamparelli, seeking his third straight NCAA bid, wasted no time getting off on the right foot, needing only two minutes to build a 15-0 lead and tie a school record with his seventh technical fall of the season. That set up a quarterfinal bout with Ursinus' Franco Mazza, who Lamparelli defeated twice earlier in the season, 4-0 and 5-1. The third meeting was similarly closely contested, with Lamparelli escaping early in the third period and getting a late stalling point for a 2-0 win.

Lamparelli, ranked 14th in Division III by The Open Mat, will face a Cortland opponent who is ranked 20th in the semis, with the winner automatically advancing to nationals.

DiEsso, like Lamparelli a Centennial Conference champion, received two byes to the quarterfinals and dropped his first bout on a close 4-1 decision in a matchup of wrestlers ranked fourth and fifth in the region. He rebounded with a 16-4 win for his seventh major decision of the season, becoming a regional placewinner for the second time in his career.

Loniewski went 3-1 in his first career regional, winning with a pin, a technical fall and a major decision. His lone loss came to the third-ranked 141-pounder in Division III. Loniewski, who leads the Mules in wins with a 24-8 record and is ranked seventh in the Mideast Region, is set to take on the region's fifth-ranked wrestler in the consolation semis.

Fairchild began his day in dramatic fashion, falling behind 6-1 to his McDaniel opponent before rallying for a 9-7 win on a takedown in the closing seconds. He pinned his first opponent in the consolation bracket in only 33 seconds, recording his 20th career pin and earning his first career regional place.

Two Muhlenberg freshmen won a pair of bouts each, coming within one win of earning places. At 149, Alex Greco notched back-to-back major decisions, and at 174, Tyson Derenberger (pictured above) recorded a technical fall and a pin in just 40 seconds.
