Lamparelli, DiEsso Win CC Golds

Led by two champions, the Muhlenberg men's wrestling team finished third at the Centennial Conference Championships.

Led by two champions, the Muhlenberg men's wrestling team finished third at the Centennial Conference Championships.

Senior Joey Lamparelli and junior Frank DiEsso won the 125-pound and 133-pound weight classes, respectively. Freshman Andrew Loniewski (141) and sophomore Ryan Fairchild (184) advanced to the finals in their classes, while junior Andrew Franklin placed third at 285.

The third-place finish was the best for the Mules since 2020, and they crowned multiple champions for the fourth time in the last five seasons.

Lamparelli won his second straight CC title, becoming the first Muhlenberg wrestler in 28 years to repeat at the lightest weight class. After breezing to a 12-1 decision in the semifinals, Lamparelli squared off against an Ursinus opponent whom he beat 4-0 when the teams wrestled in a dual last week. That bout was 1-0 heading into the third period, and the rematch was too. Lamparelli scored the lone takedown 40 seconds into the final period and added a point of riding time for a 5-1 win.

Lamparelli has won all four of his bouts at the last two CC Championships, and he's allowed only one point in each of the four.

DiEsso claimed not only his first CC gold medal, but also his first career title at any tournament as a Mule. Like Lamparelli, he started off with a major decision (9-1) in the semifinals to earn the right to face an Ursinus wrestler for the championship. His opponent advanced to the final with an overtime win against the top seed.

DiEsso got the early jump with two takedowns in the first period and led 7-1 after two, but his opponent closed to within 7-5 midway through the third period. DiEsso escaped, then recorded a takedown in the closing seconds to secure the 11-5 win and the championship.

Loniewski reached the final with a technical fall - his 20th win of the season - and a 5-1 decision. He lost by decision to a returning All-American in the final.

Fairchild pinned his first opponent in just 41 seconds, but needed overtime in the semis, taking his opponent down in just 17 seconds for his second 8-5 sudden victory in the last two weeks. He was defeated by a Merchant Marine opponent in the final.

Franklin, competing in the CC Championships for the first time, rebounded after dropping his first bout with an 8-2 decision and his first pin of the season in the consolation final.
