Doug Maynard Named Head Tennis Coach

Following a national search, Muhlenberg College has hired Doug Maynard as its head tennis coach.

Following a national search, Muhlenberg College has hired Doug Maynard as its head tennis coach.

A certified U.S. Professional Tennis Association Elite Professional who has trained ATP touring pros, Maynard brings to Muhlenberg extensive experience in collegiate tennis and athletic administration, including coaching nationally competitive Division III and Division I student-athletes. He replaces David DeLasCasas Kurvink, who resigned recently to help with family care.

"I'm very excited to be joining the Muhlenberg College athletic staff and community as the new head men's and women's tennis coach," said Maynard. "I would like to thank Director of Athletics Lynn Tubman, the athletic staff, and the Muhlenberg College administration for the opportunity to lead the tennis program and share in the lives of the student-athletes."

Maynard inherits a men's program that went 4-0 this past fall and a women's program that has won two Centennial Conference championships.

"I look forward to building on the foundation and hard work of Coach Kurvink and his staff, as we continue to develop and prepare student-athletes for their competitive experience in the Centennial Conference and for life beyond Muhlenberg," he added.

Most recently, Maynard was associate coach of tennis for two years at Sewanee: The University of the South. During his time there, he coached six men's and women's All-Americans, including the 2022 ITA Cup women's doubles national champion and the 2023 NCAA Division III women's doubles national champion.

Both of Sewanee's teams qualified and advanced to the round of 16 in the NCAA Tournament in both seasons. The men's team finished the 2022-23 year ranked No. 9 nationally, while the women were ranked 11th.

Prior to Sewanee, Maynard spent two years as assistant women's tennis coach at Boston College, where he coached two All-ACC recipients and four nationally ranked players in the toughest women's tennis conference in Division I.

Maynard began his coaching career at UNC Asheville for two seasons and was named Big South Conference men's coach of the year in 1986 after winning the Conference championship.

From 2012 to 2021, Maynard served as the tennis director at the JCC of Greater Boston in Newton, Massachusetts. He was previously the athletic director of Cannon School in Concord, North Carolina, after working a decade at Charlotte Christian School as the head men's and women's coach and athletic director.

A graduate of Liberty University, Maynard competed as a collegiate tennis player at both Ole Miss (1980-82) and UNC Asheville (1983-84). He was ranked in top 15 nationally while at Asheville and was named the school's 1983 male athlete of the year. Prior to college, he was crowned the North Carolina state high school singles champion.
