Women's Basketball Rolls into Championship
The Muhlenberg women's basketball team scored the first seven points and never looked back, defeating Notre Dame (Md.) 67-37 in the first round of the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic.
The Mules (2-1) will face tournament host York, a 67-53 winner against Mount Aloysius, in the championship game.
Two Mules recorded their first career double-doubles, with freshman Veronica Dawson scoring 17 points and pulling down 14 rebounds and sophomore Lyndsey Costigan recording career highs of 15 points and 13 boards.
Junior Katie McGrath added 10 points, while senior Ava Connolly came close to a double-double, finishing with 8 points and 9 rebounds.
Junior Mia Fitzgerald (pictured above) scored a career-high 9 points.
Neither team scored for almost the first four minutes of the game before Connolly stole the ball and passed ahead to McGrath for a fast-break layup to break the ice. Muhlenberg didn't allow a field goal until 3:36 remained in the first quarter.
It was 20-12 with four minutes remaining in the half before the Mules wrapped a 19-3 run around halftime, holding the Gators (1-3) without a field goal for almost 10 minutes.
Muhlenberg held Notre Dame to 19-percent shooting in the first three quarters and finished with a huge 55-23 advantage on the boards.
