Women's Lacrosse Wins in OT
A goal by junior Jillian Kubikowski with 2:02 left in overtime gave the Muhlenberg women's lacrosse team a big 8-7 win at Swarthmore.
The win put the Mules (10-3, 3-3) in double digits for the ninth time in program history and the third straight season. It's the first time Muhlenberg has won 10 or more in three consecutive years.
With three games remaining in the regular season, the Mules are in sixth place in the Centennial Conference, at least one game ahead of two teams they have beaten on the road, including Swarthmore.
Neither team ever led by more than two goals in the tightly contested game. Muhlenberg took a 6-4 advantage with 9:44 left in the third on the second of Kubikowski's three goals, but the Garnet (8-5, 2-5) responded with the next two goals to tie the game back up.
Junior Emily Vaughan put the Mules ahead 7-6 with 3:11 left in the third, but they did not score again in regulation. There was only one goal in the fourth quarter, a game-tying tally by Swarthmore with 8:10 remaining.
Junior Lisa DeCristofaro caused a turnover in the final minute of regulation to give Muhlenberg a chance, but a last-second shot went high.
Both goalies made saves in the first half of the overtime period. Vaughan controlled the draw at the midway mark of the period, and the Mules held the ball until Kubikowski circled in from the goalie's left, beat her defender, and fired a left-handed shot into the net.
The overtime win was the first for Muhlenberg on the road since 2014. Coming on the heels of Saturday's home overtime loss to Dickinson, it was the first time in program history that the Mules played back-to-back overtime games.
Junior Ellison Ervin (pictured above) was outstanding in goal, making a season-high 14 saves, including five in the fourth quarter and overtime. Juniors Rebecca Himelfarb and Melissa Pierpont caused 4 turnovers apiece, while Vaughan picked up 6 ground balls.
Senior Lily Seifert assisted on the Mules' first two goals to surpass 100 career assists. She is the third player in program history and the 23rd in CC history to reach the century mark.
