Men's Lacrosse Clinches Playoff Berth
The Muhlenberg men's lacrosse team tied a scoring record and clinched a playoff berth with a 19-10 home win against Haverford.
With one Centennial Conference game remaining, the Mules (8-7, 5-2) are in sole possession of third place in the standings and can be no worse than the third seed in the playoffs. Muhlenberg has now qualified for the CC playoffs three straight seasons after making the tournament only one time previously.
The 19 goals scored against Haverford tied the school record for a CC game, set in a 19-8 win against the Fords two years ago. Nine different players scored goals, led by freshmen Jack Bill and Daniel Friedel with 4 apiece. Bill now has 37 goals on the season, just four short of the school record.
Senior Jack Taub, junior Tyler Kitchen and Andrew Sellitto and freshman Chase Kusko netted two goals apiece as the Mules extended their winning streak to five games.
Sellitto (pictured above) opened the scoring just 2:24 into the game. The Fords (7-7, 3-3) responded with two goals 32 seconds apart to take a 2-1 lead, but back-to-back goals by Bill started a 7-1 run that gave Muhlenberg an 8-3 lead early in the second quarter.
Haverford closed to within three, at 9-6, midway through the second quarter before the Mules reeled off six straight goals, including two by Kitchen, to take a commanding 15-6 lead.
Senior Ryan May recorded a career-high 4 assists, and junior Spencer Hallagan assisted on a pair of man-up goals.
A beneficiary of the offensive outburst was sophomore Max Kunnath, who made 8 saves to earn the win in his first career start.
Junior Griffin Minuto went 16-of-22 on faceoffs, tying a career high with 9 ground balls.
