Softball Edged in Playoff Game

The Muhlenberg softball team fell to Gettysburg, 5-4, in the winner's bracket championship of the Centennial Conference playoffs.

The Muhlenberg softball team fell to Gettysburg, 5-4, in the winner's bracket championship of the Centennial Conference playoffs.

Due to rain at Washington College, which was slated to host the tournament for the whole weekend, the playoff schedule was adjusted. The Mules played their game at Gettysburg, while the elimination game between Washington and Swarthmore was moved to Wednesday. The winner of that game is scheduled to host the remainder of the tournament on Saturday, May 11.

Muhlenberg would need to defeat that team once and then Gettysburg twice to win its second championship in three years.

The Mules (25-15) took a 2-1 lead in the top of the second on a two-out, two-run error, but the Bullets (27-11) answered with four runs in the bottom of the inning.

Gettysburg did not score again, but Muhlenberg came up one short despite threatening in each of the last four innings.

The Mules had three singles without scoring in the fourth. Senior Gillian Zack hit a two-out RBI single in the fifth to make it 5-3, and in the sixth, Muhlenberg put its first two runners on - one on a pinch-hit single by senior Kersti Svenningsen (pictured above) - before a double play defused the rally.

Zack added another RBI single in the seventh, but the game ended with the tying run on first.

Junior Kaya Mahy and freshman Skyla Campisi had two hits apiece for the Mules.
