Women's Lacrosse Posts Huge Road Win
The Muhlenberg women's lacrosse team scored its biggest win of the season, winning 11-8 at Washington College.
The Shorewomen (7-5, 1-3), who have reached the semifinals in each of the last four Centennial Conference tournaments, received votes in the Division III poll earlier this season. The Mules (9-2, 2-2) had not won in Chestertown since 2010, and they hadn't held Washington to single digits in goals since 2005.
Muhlenberg built a four-goal lead in the first half, then withstood a charge that saw the Shorewomen close to within a goal in the third quarter.
Junior Melissa Pierpont had a tremendous game on defense, recording a career-high 7 ground balls and causing 3 turnovers. Junior Emily Vaughan also caused 3 turnovers to go along with 4 draw controls, while junior Lisa DeCristofaro recorded a pair of caused turnovers.
Juniors Ellison Ervin and sophomore Meaghan Haughney combined to make 11 saves in goal.
Junior Jillian Kubikowski led the offense with 4 goals and an assist, and senior Nicole Steiner netted 3 goals for her 10th hat trick of the season, giving her an even 150 goals for her career.
The Mules trailed 3-2 before going on a decisive 5-0 run in which they held Washington scoreless for more than 15 minutes of game time. Kubikowski contributed to three of the five scores with a pair of goals and an assist.
Muhlenberg was up 8-4 going into the last minute of the first half but was blanked in the third quarter and took a slim 8-7 advantage into the final period.
The Mules kept the Shorewomen from scoring on their first two fourth-quarter possessions, and two free-position goals by Kubikowsi extended the lead to 10-7.
Washington scored with 7:11 remaining to make it 10-8 but was held to just one shot the rest of the game. Sophomore Ava Milia put the icing on the cake with a big insurance goal with 3:14 left.
