We all know the Disney versions, but what are the real stories Where do they come from How did they reach us And how have they affected our perceptions of Arabs, Islam, and the exotic, mysterious, and potentially threatening East This course will focus on the collection of stories known as the Arabian Nights. We will begin by examining the stories themselves and how they reflect the medieval Middle Eastern societies in which they were first compiled. We will then consider the translation and transmission of these stories to the West.
