Women's Lacrosse Rains Down Goals
The Muhlenberg women's lacrosse team scored nine goals in the first quarter and went on to a 22-14 win against Drew at rainy Varsity Field.
The 22 goals were the fourth-most in a game in program history; the Mules (3-0) hadn't scored that many since 2003, when they tied a school record with 24 against Cedar Crest. Muhlenberg recorded 14 assists, a total topped only four times in program history.
Leading the offense were seniors Nicole Steiner and Lily Seifert, who set career highs with 8 goals and 7 assists, respectively. Steiner became the 10th Muhlenberg player to score as many as 8 goals in a game, topping her previous career best of 6, while Seifert became just the sixth with 7 assists in a game, reaching the career mark of 75 assists.
Junior Jillian Kubikowski connected on all 4 of her shots, while sophomore Lauren Cherven netted 3 goals for her third straight hat trick to start the season. Sophomore Ava Milia finished with 4 points on a pair of goals and a pair of assists.
Sophomore Danielle Sautner matched her total from all last season with 3 assists.
The Rangers (1-3) scored off the opening draw, just 31 seconds into the game, but the Mules scored twice in 20 seconds to take their first lead. Drew tied the game back up at 2-2 before Muhlenberg reeled off four in a row - two by Steiner, one by Milia and one by junior Emily Vaughan - to take the lead for good.
It was 9-4 at the end of the first quarter and 11-4 early in the second quarter after goals by freshman Emma Youngling and Steiner 23 seconds apart. The Mules never led by fewer than five goals the rest of the game, opening up a 10-point spread early in the fourth quarter.
In addition to her 2 goals, Vaughan finished with 7 draw controls, 3 caused turnovers and 3 ground balls. Sophomore Abba Diglio (pictured above) contributed 5 draw controls, 4 caused turnovers and 3 ground balls.
