Women's Basketball Wins Ninth Straight

The Muhlenberg women's basketball team pulled away in the fourth quarter to defeat Haverford, 65-56, in its last game before finals.

The win was the ninth straight for the Mules (9-1, 2-0), matching their longest streak since the 2017-18 team started out 13-0.

Muhlenberg scored the first six points on a pair of threes by senior Emily Unger and never trailed. The Fords (3-5, 0-2), however, erased an 11-point deficit early in the second half, going on a 12-1 run to tie the score at 40 at the two-minute mark of the third quarter.

After a free throw by freshman Veronica Dawson put the Mules back on top, an unusual play extended the lead. In the battle for the rebound off a missed three-pointer, the ball deflected off the hand of Dawson and into the basket.

Although Haverford made the last field goal of the quarter to close to within 43-42, Muhlenberg opened the fourth quarter on a 12-0 run, starting with a three-pointer by junior Mia Fitzgerald, to take its biggest lead.

The Fords cut the deficit to seven before Unger (pictured above) swished a three with 1:14 left to seal the win.

Senior Ava Connolly went 7-for-7 from the line in the final 35 seconds and finished with 23 points, four short of her career high. She also recorded 4 assists, including the 200th of her career.

Dawson scored 12 of her 16 points in the second half, and Unger netted 14 points, moving into fifth place on the program's all-time list with 139 career three-pointers.

Two Mule seniors who had been sidelined with injuries made their returns: Rachel Saxton contributed 5 points, 3 assists and 2 steals, and Megan Winters pulled down a pair of rebounds.
