Volleyball Poised for Playoffs

The Muhlenberg volleyball team posted an impressive 3-0 sweep at Washington College to put itself in strong position for a Centennial Conference playoff berth.

With one week remaining in the regular season, the Mules (10-11, 4-4) are tied for fifth place in the CC. They host the team they are tied with, Haverford, on Wednesday, and host another team in contention, Dickinson (3-5) on Saturday. Ursinus (4-5) - a team Muhlenberg has already defeated this season - is also in the mix.

Muhlenberg reached double digits in victories for the 13th straight season and the 32nd time in the last 33 seasons.

Senior Esmae Oehler led the Mule attack with 13 kills, adding 10 kills for her fourth double-double of the season. Junior Christina Marcin just missed one, finishing with 9 kills and a team-high 13 digs.

Muhlenberg began the match with back-to-back aces by sophomore Jenny Ryan and kept the lead for the entire first set, winning 25-20. The Mules also went wire-to-wire in the second set, winning 25-17.

The third set was the closest of the three, with the Shorewomen (12-10, 2-6) overcoming an early four-point deficit to take a 17-16 lead. A solo block by freshman Olivia Bruno started a 5-1 run that put Muhlenberg in front at 21-18.

Washington rallied to close to within a point twice, at 21-20 and 22-21, but a kill by senior Rachel Jacobs, another one by Oehler and a service ace by sophomore Chloe Gaglione closed out the match.

Ryan recorded 18 assists while splitting time at setter with freshman Ansley Asche (pictured above), who finished with 15. Freshman Megan Bagrosky pulled up 10 digs, hitting double figures for the second straight match.
