Late Pins Lift Men's Wrestling to Dramatic Win
The Muhlenberg men's wrestling team won the consolation bracket at the Virginia Duals, closing out with four straight pins to defeat Marymount, 31-22, in its final match.
The Mules (6-5) began the two-day tournament with a 27-21 loss to The Apprentice School. Because one of the 16 teams dropped out of the tournament, they received a bye to the consolation semifinals.
Muhlenberg opened the second day with a 32-12 defeat of Division II Coker before facing Marymount in the ninth-place match.
The Saints recorded two pins and a major decision in the middle weights to open up a 22-7 lead before the Mules began their comeback. Senior Anson Dewar capped a 3-0 weekend by pinning his opponent late in the first period, making the score 22-13.
At 184, junior Ryan Fairchild faced a Marymount opponent who is ranked eighth in Region 3 and came within one win of qualifying for nationals last year. Fairchild took only 30 seconds to pin him, capping his own 3-0 tournament.
With the score now 22-19, the Mules needed a win or a loss by no more than a decision at 197 to have any chance of taking the match. It didn't look promising when senior Paul Parise was taken down and turned on his back twice in the first period. But after ending the first period in a 14-2 hole, Parise pinned his opponent with 14 seconds left in the second to put Muhlenberg in the lead.
That left it up to junior heavyweight Ben Krauss, who had taken to the mat against Apprentice with the score tied 21-21 and got pinned. This time it was Krauss (pictured above) who did the pinning, flattening his opponent in just 36 seconds to clinch the match.
Parise's come-from-way-behind pin against Marymount was one of two of its kind for the Mules in the tournament. Against Apprentice, Fairchild trailed 16-3 at one point before pinning his opponent in the final minute of the second period.
Parise, graduate student Joey Lamparelli, and sophomore Andrew Loniewski all went 2-1 on the weekend, with Lamparelli becoming the seventh wrestler in program history to reach 90 career wins.
Senior Andrew Franklin capped the win against Coker with a 6-1 decision in his season debut, and sophomore CJ Horvath recorded a big win against Marymount, overcoming an early takedown for a 9-5 decision in which he broke a 5-5 tie on a takedown in the final minute.
