Field Hockey Earns First Win in Home Opener

The Muhlenberg field hockey team scored once in each quarter to defeat Moravian, 4-1, for its first win of the 2024 season.

The Muhlenberg field hockey team scored once in each quarter to defeat Moravian, 4-1, for its first win of the 2024 season.

The victory earned the team the Sodexo Cup, given to the winner in each of the four matchups between the two Lehigh Valley rivals this weekend.

After netting all four of their goals in the first two games of the season off penalty corners, the Mules (1-2) scored all four of their against the Greyhounds (0-3) from the run of play.

Junior Abba Diglio opened the scoring in the 10th minute when she picked off an attempted Moravian clearing pass and went straight to goal, finishing for her 21st career goal.

Early in the second quarter, junior Erin DiSandro took a pass from sophomore MJ Callahan in the circle, spun and shot into the top left corner of the cage for her first goal of the season. DiSandro nearly scored again by shooting high about two minutes later, but her attempt hit the crossbar.

DiSandro did get her second goal in the fourth quarter, converting a pass from Diglio to secure her third career multiple-goal game. in between, senior Mikayla DeMichele knocked in a pass from freshman Danielle Kapsak early in the second half for her third career goal.

It was only the second time the Mules scored in all four quarters since field hockey switched from halves in 2019, and it was the first time they scored exactly once in each quarter.

Playing at home for the first time this season, Muhlenberg rolled to a 19-3 advantage in shots and did not allow a shot for the first three quarters.
