Softball Slugs Way to Split
The Muhlenberg softball team split its final non-conference doubleheader of the season, taking the second game at Moravian.
After being held to two baserunners in the first game, a 14-0 loss, the Mules (20-13) broke out the bats in the nightcap, belting out 14 hits, including two home runs and a triple, in a 14-9 victory.
Both home runs came off the bat of junior Kaya Mahy - a two-run shot to cap a four-run first and a grand slam in the fourth. Mahy (pictured above) became the ninth different player in program history to hit two home runs in a game and added a third-inning RBI single, giving her seven RBI. That tied the school record that was set in 2011 and has now been matched twice in the last five days, first by senior Gillian Zack against Gettysburg.
The 14 runs were the most scored the Muhlenberg against the Greyhounds (18-7), who advanced to the Division III championship round last year, since 1988, when they plated 17. The Mules hadn't reached double digits against Moravian since a 10-0 win in 1990.
Sophomore Scooter Hulsen, whose double was Muhlenberg's lone hit in the first game, tied the school record for hits in a game by going 4-for-5 with a triple and three runs scored.
Senior Sophia Cicchetti, who had her record-tying 26-game hitting streak snapped in the first game, went 2-for-5 with a two-run single that put the Mules ahead to stay at 9-7 in the third. She scored Muhlenberg's final run on Hulsen's triple for her school-record 41st run scored of the season.
Freshman Sklya Campisi also hit a two-run single, and freshman Lillie Teague went 2-for-5 and scored three runs.
The 20-win season is the 13th in program history.
