Wait Worth It for Field Hockey

The Muhlenberg field hockey team improved its playoff chances with a 3-0 home win against Washington College.

The Muhlenberg field hockey team improved its playoff chances with a 3-0 home win against Washington College.

With two games to go in the regular season, the Mules (7-8, 3-5) are tied for seventh place, one out of the final playoff spot. They close the campaign with road games against Haverford (2-6 CC) and Dickinson (5-3 CC).

Scheduled for a 1:00 start, Muhlenberg's final home game was delayed when Washington's bus got caught in bad traffic. The game time was moved back to 6:00, and after it finally started the Shorewomen (7-8, 3-5) won two penalty corners in the first minute.

The Mules settled in, though, and controlled play for the majority of the second period. Sophomore Abba Diglio opened the scoring early in the second when she took a pass from sophomore Erin DiSandro, dribbled in and drove the ball past the goalie for her 10th goal of the season.

The tally tied Diglio with DiSandro for the team lead in goals and gave Muhlenberg two players with double digits in goals for only the fourth time in the last 25 years.

Diglio broke the tie less than two minutes later. Off a penalty corner, senior Katie Raab took a shot that was saved. DiSandro (pictured above) collected the rebound and took another shot that was saved, and Diglio put in the rebound.

Junior Zabelle Aslanian put the icing on the cake in the fourth quarter when her shot from the wing was kicked into the air by the Washington goalie but had enough spin on it to find its way into the cage.

Freshman Maddie Schwartz made a pair of saves to pick up her third straight win as starting goalie, and senior Taylor Canfield preserved the shutout with a defensive save late in the game.
