Field Hockey Continues Playoff Push
The Muhlenberg field hockey team continued its push to a Centennial Conference playoff berth with a 4-2 win at Haverford.
With one game remaining in the regular season, the CC standings from fourth place through seventh place look like this:
Bryn Mawr 5-4
Dickinson 5-4
Ursinus 5-5
Muhlenberg 4-5
The Mules (8-8 overall) close at Dickinson on Saturday, while Bryn Mawr finishes at home against winless McDaniel. Wins by Muhlenberg and Bryn Mawr would result in a three-way tie for fifth place, with two teams earning CC playoff berths and one team left out.
Four different players scored goals at Haverford for Muhlenberg, which has won four in a row and has scored at least three goals in four straight games for the first time since 2000.
The Fords (7-9, 2-7) broke the ice just 28 seconds into the game, but the Mules regrouped and tied the score when sophomore Erin DiSandro netted her 11th goal of the season in the ninth minute.
Sophomore Abba Diglio assisted on DiSandro's goal and also assisted on a goal by junior Erin Jackson that gave Muhlenberg its first lead with 3:13 left in the first half.
The Mules earned a penalty corner just before halftime and extended their advantage when junior Mikayla DeMichele (pictured above) scored her first goal of the season.
Haverford closed back to within one early in the third quarter, but Diglio notched her 12th goal of the season a little more than three minutes later, taking back the team and CC lead in goals and giving Muhlenberg its two-goal lead back.
The Fords took four shots in the final period but could not get any closer.
DiSandro (31) and Diglio (30) both reached the 30-point mark for the season, giving the Mules two players with 30-plus points in the same season for only the second time in program history.
