Baseball Comes Back Three Times
The Muhlenberg baseball team came back three times to tie before falling to Dickinson, 11-8 in 11 innings.
The Mules (7-21, 1-9) overcame deficits of 3-1, 6-3 and 8-6, tying the game for the final time in the bottom of the eighth on a dramatic two-run home run by senior Ryan Riccio. The Red Devils (19-8, 7-3), one day removed from a doubleheader split with nationally ranked Johns Hopkins, finally pulled ahead for good with three runs in the top of the 11th.
Senior Brendan Hughes, who was also Muhlenberg's starting pitcher, hit an RBI single in the first and an RBI double in the third to tie the game at 3-3.
After Dickinson plated single runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth, Hughes scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the sixth. A run-scoring groundout got the Mules to within one, and senior Nick Whelan brought in the tying run with an RBI double in the seventh.
The Red Devils went back on top with two runs in the top of the eighth. In the bottom of the inning, sophomore Aidan Legner led off with a single and was still at first with two outs when Riccio (pictured above) cranked an 0-1 pitch over the fence in left for his first career home run.
Neither team scored in the ninth, sending Muhlenberg to extra innings for the first time since the first game of the season. The Mules got the winning run to third with two outs in the bottom of the 10th but could not score.
Riccio finished 4-for-6 with a double and pair of singles to go along with his home run. It was his first career four-hit game and his ninth multiple-hit game in the last 13. Senior Nick Belli had singled, walked and scored twice.
