Baseball Splits Opening Doubleheader

The Muhlenberg baseball team brought its bats on the first day of the 2025 season, scoring 23 runs on 26 hits in a doubleheader split at Rutgers-Newark.

After dropping the opener, 11-5, the Mules scored in eight of nine innings, including multiple runs in each of the first four, to take the nightcap, 18-5.

Senior Brendan Hughes went 5-for-5 in the nightcap, the first five-hit game by a Muhlenberg player since 2019. He drove in four runs with RBI hits in the second, third and fourth innings, narrowly missing a pair of home runs.

Sophomore Marc Quarrie didn't miss a home run, hitting a solo blast in the first game as part of a 5-for-8 day that also included a pair of doubles and two stolen bases. He scored five runs in the second game.

A pair of Mules returning to the lineup also put up big numbers. Graduate student Jack Kent, who suffered a season-ending injury early in the 2024 campaign, went 3-for-5 with two doubles in the opener, and senior Brendan Bussiere, who did not play last year, reached base in all five plate appearances in the second game, with two singles, a double and two walks.

Freshman Steven Dimovski hit two doubles and drove in a pair of runs in the second game.

Another first-year player, Kieran Mulholland, was impressive in his debut, allowing only one earned run in four relief innings in the nightcap.

Sophomore Spencer Hobson hit a sacrifice fly in each game, and Muhlenberg also scored a run on a bases-loaded balk in each game.
